Literary Festival Conversation: Unlocking Sexual Self-Agency and the Delayed Man Syndrome
Literary Festival – Interview with Dr. Paul Abramowitz about his book
In a profound conversation at the Literary Festival, Clinical Psychologist Dr. Andrea Phillips sat down with Dr. Paul Abramowitz, PhD in Human Sexuality, and author of Sex Hardwired by Nature Evolving by Choice. The discussion centered on the necessity of providing heterosexual men with a new framework for understanding and mastering their sexual nature.
Dr. Phillips noted that, in her 34 years of practice, there was a missing slice of the pie in mental health training, the biological hard wiring of men. This book offers a perspective that shifts the approach to couples and men’s therapy, inviting an upgrade in humanity.
The Predicament: Why Heterosexual Men Stay Silent
Dr. Abramowitz explained that the book arose from his own observations and years spent listening to the stories of hundreds of men in group work and the coaching space. He identified a fracture between men’s rush toward greater consciousness (through mindfulness, yoga, etc.) and their sexual nature, which remains shrouded in silence, shame and guilt, and vulnerability.
He posits that society offers heterosexual men a “red carpet” laid out for reproduction, meaning they often lack the necessity to engage in the deep archaeological dig into their sexuality that others (like gay or trans individuals) must undertake. This lack of self-reflection results in specific, unaddressed predicaments for the “men in the middle of the bell curve”.
The Delayed Man Syndrome
The interview highlighted the concept of Delayed Man Syndrome, where men may exhibit sexual adolescence well into adulthood. This is not merely a failure to grow up, but a consequence of our reproductive nature.
- Biological Impediment: The reproductive biological intelligence makes urgent what it deems important (reproduction), thereby impeding the growing-up process.
- Cognitive Vulnerability: The constant state of preparedness for sex contributes greatly to the Delayed Man Syndrome because cognitive vulnerability or a fragmented mind must remain constant where sexual opportunity is concerned, and sexual opportunity is everywhere, all the time.
- The Madman: Dr Abramowitz quotes Kingsley Amos as he awoke from his libidinal drive : “You’re waking up from a 50-year relationship with this active libido… it’s like being chained to a Madman“.
Dr. Abramowitz emphasizes that biology dictates not only our sexual reality but our entire reality sexually. However, he states firmly: “No excuse can be found in biology for the bad behavior of men”.
The Journey to Sexual Self-Agency
The fundamental basis of the book is the idea that No man is really free who cannot discover his own sexual self agency . Dr. Abramowitz’s work provides the mechanism for men to achieve self-mastery by recognizing and partnering with their hard wiring, not by constricting into a place of hypervigilant self control .
The book, designed as a Trilogy, guides the reader through:
- The Predicament: Identifying the problem.
- The Design: Exploring biological hardwiring and the emotional sexual hardwiring (meta-themes like shame, guilt, secrecy).
- The Choice Bridge: Actioning solutions to move out of the adolescent sex brain and into an activated man.
The Power of Curiosity and Vulnerability
Dr. Phillips noted that women often struggle to comprehend the constancy of the male sexual drive. Dr. Abramowitz offered an analogy for women to understand this biological constant:
- The Spinach Craving: During the interview, he referred to the uncontrollable, relentless craving pregnant women experience, which only resolves naturally after the third trimester. He suggests that this gives women a sense of the pre-sexual tension men live with, but for men, it doesn’t go away.
The solution for couples lies in developing curiosity-based research, which puts aside judgment and entitlements in favor of seeking to understand the other. By tackling this difficult, vulnerable topic, men can achieve sexual self-agency, which is a very powerful centrifuge that alters how they meet the world.
The ultimate goal is to move heterosexual relationships away from fairy tales and the Pleasure Principle toward an evolutionary relationship upgrade marked by mindfulness and transformation.
