Awakening Doctor
Bridging Biology & Consciousness
– with Paul Abramowitz
I was recently interviewed on the podcast platform Awakening Doctor by my dear friend and colleague Dr. Maria Christodoulou. Maria is an extraordinary human being who specializes in bespoke online coaching for those of us who are navigating health, life and career transitions. We explored some less discussed topics such as the impact of pornography on the developing brain and behaviours and why it’s often necessary to be our own whistle-blower when we desire change .And yes, we talked about my book, but Maria was equally interested in hearing about my personal life ,from childhood epiphanies about the nature of reality to the weighty influence of apartheid, race, privilege, and an ongoing journey with long COVID and Lyme ( and a host of other topics )
Awakening Doctor
Bridging Biology & Consciousness
– with Paul Abramowitz
The podcast episode, hosted by Dr. Maria Christodoulou for the Awakening Doctor podcast, features an in-depth conversation with Dr. Paul Abramowitz, a periodontist, PhD in human sexuality, and author of SeXed – Hardwired by Nature Evolving by Choice. The episode, produced and edited by Amy Kay, explores Dr. Abramowitz’s personal journey, his research into male sexuality, and his recent health challenges.
I. Male Sexuality and the Book
The primary focus is Dr. Abramowitz’s research and writing on male sexuality.
- The Problem:Over many years of Co facilitating and leading consciousness workshops for men – and on his own journey, Dr. Abramowitz felt frustrated by the lack of sincere conversation about the “elephant in the room”, male sexuality. His research confirmed that a sexual narrative was often “hijacking” men’s consciousness, leading to profound cognitive dissonance and suffering. The prevalent description of men as being merely “hardwired for sex” and seen as a caricature was as far as serious conversation has gone for the average man .The bulk of literature was focussed on medicalisation ( ED , PE) , perpetration and asexuality , but very little if anything granular about what it actually means grow up and live in a male biological body, regarding Self Sexual Agency , executive functioning and meaningful relationship building and sustaining.
- The Solution: His book focuses on men in the “middle of the bell curve”, those sincerely seeking awareness and aiming to grow their emotional and intimacy quotient with their partners. The goal is to understand male biological hard wiring deeply enough to “partner with” it, allowing a man to become the “driver rather than being driven” by his impulses. The CEO rather than an employee or manager.
- Language and Creation: He felt obligated to write the book as he could not find one like it. To move beyond old conversations, he made up 40 to 60 new words. Understanding through another point of view – offered by these neologisms , brings about a neuroplasticity , which sees us alter our perception , and therefore our actions
- Pornography: Dr. Abramowitz considers the current convergence of , cell phones, AI, and social media a “disaster,” especially for developing brains. He warns that pornography becomes a “teacher” that leads to men misunderstanding women by “stop[ping] seeing the woman that inhabits the form”.
- Advice to Young Men: He encourages young men to understand the biological imperative and learn how to “hack into our reproductive biological intelligence”. He advises finding an older mentor who has “done some research on themselves” and practicing an “observational quality” to reduce the “puppeteering” caused by hard wiring. Due to our reproductive biology’s profound leaving of fingerprints all over our awareness – this is a task that requires intention , like anything you set your mind to .But the fruits are life altering .
II. Personal Journey and Medical Career
Dr. Abramowitz shares details of his life that informed his work:
- Family Background: He was born in Cape Town in 1962. His mother provided a nurturing, safe environment and instilled a commitment to studies. His father was a beloved, dedicated, and yet often absent( from home)gynecologist, obstetrician, and sex therapist. He found his father’s books and Forum magazine early, which gave him a sense of the complexities of sexuality before puberty.
- Education and Balance: He chose a medical career, specifically periodontics (which he saw as manageable timewise) to avoid his father’s intense schedule. He was always fascinated by the biological intelligence that runs our bodies , as well as disease and healing , and felt enormously privileged to be able to partner with this intelligence in the surgical field .He prioritized management of time and self-care. While studying at Wits, he turned down both a scholarship to play professional soccer and an offer to work as a spy for the government.
- Return to South Africa: He transferred to the US (Ivy League school)U Penn for his specialization. He described his time in the US as a bootcamp – fiercely rewarding – but due to his age at the time , the different culture and excessive focus on glitz and money – challenging . He returned to South Africa in 1993, driven by a deep appreciation for the “qualitative nature of South Africans” and a desire to address his own relationship with the toxic narrative of apartheid.
- Consciousness Work: He became deeply involved in men’s work (Mankind Project). He was invited by one of his beloved certified leadership mentors – a Black man from Chicago -to co-found a white men’s circle to facilitate crucial, difficult conversations around race and white privilege, acknowledging the shame and remorse he felt. He also studied Eastern medicine through the art of Shiatsu.
III. Experience with Long COVID
Dr. Abramowitz reveals his recent struggle with Long COVID (Long Co), which severely impacted his health and work capacity.
- Symptoms and Diagnosis: He contracted COVID-19 in August; his partner, Karina, subsequently required hospitalization. Dr. Abramowitz suffered from severe fatigue, brain fog, and eventually received diagnoses of Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), SIBO, and POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia, characterized by a sustained high heart rate upon standing). He also received anticoagulant therapy for blood clots , and was impacted by the fact that the virus had activated -amplified an old exposure to Lyme .
- Impact: The cognitive impairment felt like dementia. He had to take three months off work. He acknowledges that without proper support, some people with Long Covid have suicided, and he expresses sadness and disappointment toward those who claim COVID was a “nonsense thing”.
- Learning and Transformation: The experience taught him a much deeper quality of gratitude for his health, amplified his kindness, and reinforced the need for a keen sense of presence. It also gave him greater access to a profound awareness he first experienced at age five, the distinction between biology and consciousness, and reminded him that this reality is one of many.
